Oral history coupled with US records suggest that the original Newry emigrated from South America to the Bahamas.  

Early Bahamian records suggest that before 1850 Newrys settled in Inagua, the most southern island of the Bahamas. The family then settled on Acklins Island the bedrock of Newrys in the Bahamas. 

The two remaining Newry families trace their roots to Major's Crooked Island and Binnacle Hill Acklins; However Newrys are now found mostly on the island of New Providence.
